Custom A Frame Gantry Cranes

A Frame Gantry

Build your A frame gantry to suit your individual workplace lifting requirements. We are able to offer a range of options including safe working load lifting capacity, height of lift and working span. These are the standard choices we will need from you in order to quote and build your gantry. To further enhance your gantry we offer a range of options to include parking jacks, heavy duty castors, catenary systems and isolators. When it comes to lifting equipment we can help there too. Whether you need a beam trolley, chain block or electric hoist we can supply them along with your gantry at the best possible prices.

Why Use an A Frame Gantry

An A-frame Crane provides a great solution for lifting and lowering heavy and cumbersome loads. These Gantry systems provide a load bearing framework and can offer a great substitute to those big or permanently fixed, crane structures. Fixed cranes require lots of space, are much more costly and often unnecessary for something which may be used infrequently. An a-frame gantry system is much more cost efficient as they are not a permanent structure. If they have castors they are mobile or if they are bolted down they can be classed as semi-permanent. They are also fairly easy to move to other locations or into storage if they are not needed.
An A Frame Gantry has many benefits and can be the perfect solution to heavy lifting. Commonly used in a wide range of industrial sectors, as well as smaller workshops etc. The non-permanency of these gantries means much smaller layout costs than a fixed overhead crane. A-frame’s also do not require structural surveying to ensure the building’s stability.

A Frame Gantry Options in Detail

Here are some details of the things to consider before ordering an a frame gantry.
Please bear in mind with the sizing that not all measurements stated below will be available for all SWL’s this is due to steel sizes required for each model determined from the professional design, load and force calculations. For example only the 5000kg SWL model can have the maximum 5000mm height of lift; for all other models it will be 4500mm.

Safe Working Load.

This is the maximum lifting capacity of the crane. It will be clearly marked across the top beam for easy identification and should NEVER be exceeded. Our choice of SWL includes 500kg, 1000kg, 2000kg, 3000kg and 5000kg.

Height Of Lift

This is the maximum measurement from the ground to the underside of the top beam, giving you the maximum height of lift attainable. This is the measurement we use rather than the overall size which will include the top steel beam measurement. 3000mm, 3500mm, 4000mm, 4500mm and 5000mm are your options, model depending.

Working Span

This measurement is the maximum working span or the useable length of the beam in which a beam trolley can travel. 3000, 4000 & 5000mm are the standard options here.

Mobility

Do you need your a frame to be mobile so that they can be moved around? If the answer is yes then a set of castors can be added, at least two of them will need a brake which must be applied prior to load lifting to prevent unwanted movement. You can opt for 4 braked castors if required.
If you would prefer your a frame to be static then we can add some plated feet instead of castors. The plated will have pre-drilled holes so that they can be bolted into the floor (not essential) for optimum safety and stability.

Parking Jacks

When the ground is uneven objects can easily become unstable and potentially tip over. This is also true for an A frame gantry. To alleviate this potential stability issue we can add adjustable parking jacks to each leg. Each of the 4 jacks can be adjusted independently in tiny increments, therefore with a little trial and error you can adjust each jack until the gantry is completely level (check with a spirit level). By using parking jacks your gantry and load will be as stable as possible and thus much safer. Even if your ground level is smooth and flat, parking jacks are still a good idea, especially on larger models to provide that extra stability when lifting larger or heavier loads.

Power Options

We have our own electrical engineers who can add power sockets, isolators or knockout boxes to your gantry. These options are typically chosen when you intend to use powered lifting devices on the beam.
In addition to these catenary wires can be added to hold power cables safely out of the way during device movement.

Lifting Equipment

Typical equipment used on an A frame gantry includes beam trolleys, these may be a push travel, geared travel or powered travel option. They enable the easy attachment of a lifting hoist to do the heavy lifting. Chain blocks or electric hoists are popular options.
With this tried and tested combination, once a load is attached to the load hook of the hoist it can be lifted via the hoisting device and moved back and forth across the beam via the trolley.
We are able to supply all types of lifting gear to suit your lifting application, from the above mentioned equipment to slings, shackles and lifting clamps of all kinds; Just ask!

Using an A Frame Gantry From Set Up and Safe Use to Maintenance

Set Up;
An A frame gantry is relatively easy to set up with the use of a forklift and/or crane as there are only 3 main sections; 2 ‘A’ frames (the side legs) and 1 top runway beam.
A forklift truck is required to lift the runway beam to the necessary height so the a frame legs can be positioned underneath. This is typically done using a second truck or crane and sling to raise the leg to vertical (they are heavy). Ensure lockable castors have the brakes applied.

When in position align the 4 holes in the top beam and a frame and fit the bolts and spring washers then secure with the nut. Repeat for the 2nd A frame.
Double check all bolts then remove any ancillary equipment used.
TIP: Attach the beam trolley and hoist to the beam whilst on the forklift before the side legs are fitted. This saves much effort in lifting heavy and awkward equipment to the necessary height later.

Safe Use Essentials

Always plan your lifting operation. Here are some basic but essential tips for using your gantry safely;
ALWAYS
Visually check for defects prior to use looking for distortions in the framework etc.
Check the bolts are tight, the braked castors work correctly and the parking jacks are in full working order if fitted.
Use brakes and jacks (if fitted) before lifting commences.
Ensure the gantry is level
Manoeuvre the gantry directly over the load.
Unplug any powered items before moving the gantry to a new position.
Have gantries thoroughly inspected annually in accordance with LOLER.

NEVER;
Attempt to move a gantry whilst it has a load attached.
Go over the lifting capacity (SWL) stated on the gantry
Allow a load to swing or rotate.
Walk underneath when a load is suspended.
Use a gantry with suspected or known issues.
